Since it is important to distinguish between the terms ‘integration’ and ‘assimilation’ in the context of multiculturalism, you should/need to be able to define both terms.
Integration: Different ethnicities share values. Minorities are accepted and protected by the law.
Assimilation: Disengagement [dt. (hier): Loslösung] from origin cultures, habits and traditions and adoption of those from a new country of residence.
The integration of foreign citizens does not entail a complete rejection of old cultures and the adoption of the new; rather, it means accepting and respecting a multitude of lifestyles and cultures.
Complete assimilation should not be required in order to be accepted into any society. There is no necessity [dt.: Notwendigkeit] for assimilation which would lead to an extinction [dt.: Auslöschung] of an individual’s way of living as a consequence. Assimilation is comparable to the melting pot metaphor, which includes the adoption of certain aspects from another culture in order to be accepted and a part of society.
If rules and laws are observed, it is possible to cooperate with each other and cope with disagreements [dt. (hier): Differenzen, Meinungsverschiedenheiten].
Integration in a multicultural society by establishing a common basis regarding different religions, languages, attitudes, or values from different people is significant for enabling them to live together peacefully. Peaceful existence without a mixture of different cultures is implied in the term salad bowl. The metaphor describes the co-existence of different cultures and ethnicities.
The lack [dt.: Mangel] of integration and social cohesion [dt.: sozialer Zusammenhalt] is increasing the levels of segregation and social exclusion.
British politician David Cameron says in a speech that it is not progressive to live separate lives by refusing to integrate with each other and by failing to embrace different values. Foreign citizens do not have to give up cultural and religious beliefs to properly integrate because we’re living in a democratic and free community. Nevertheless, Cameron is criticised for his Laissez-faire policy, which does not create appropriate conditions for immigrants to learn about the Western values and pillars of democracy. Instead, parallel societies have formed, whose peripheral existence is seen as a failure of integration. To sum it up, the promotion of social coherence has been neglected and what remains is uncertainty and suspicions in British society.
What integration is about:
Participation in wider society and institutions and encouraging the interaction between communities and emphasising advantages of a bicultural identity. The elimination of prejudices and racism is necessary for a successful integration. In terms of social cohesion and integration, integration policy is as important as fighting racism. Living together with immigrants for some time helps to understand the culture and the different ways of thinking.
